Ensuring the workforce is equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes is an essential part of providing effective services and support for people experiencing severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD).

This learning series offers a range of sessions designed to improve people’s understanding of SMD, the support options available to people who experience this, and the confidence and skills to implement approaches that work.

These sessions will be of interest to individuals and organisations that provide direct support to people affected by multiple disadvantage, particularly those aiming to implement a navigator approach.

Broadly speaking, we have three main types of events within this series:

  • Topic in Focus
  • Service Spotlight
  • Skills Development

Click on the links below to understand more about these different sessions and to register for future sessions and view resources and recordings from past events.

Events are free to attend.

Topic in Focus

These sessions spotlight important topics that are relevant to people working across the multiple disadvantage landscape. SMD is complex and multifaceted, whereby people working in this field are required to understand numerous and intersecting issues in order to best support their clients. These sessions are responsive to important and emerging subjects, as identified by our members, particularly where there are knowledge gaps or in areas where there have been significant shifts or developments.

Service Spotlight

These sessions raise awareness of local service provision in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and the various support pathways that exist for people who experience SMD. These workshops showcase a range of support options that are available and how staff can refer service users into these, as well as understanding eligibility and entitlements. These sessions aim to demystify some of the lesser understood areas of our local system, so these are better known with a view to improve joined up working and signposting.

Skills Development

Working effectively to support people who experience SMD requires a wide and varied knowledge base and skill set. Beyond our introductory e-learning modules, these sessions are designed to develop key skills and competencies so that the local workforce knows how best to support their beneficiaries who experience SMD and are confident to deliver approaches that work. This will cover how to work in trauma sensitive ways and psychologically informed practice. This may also include sessions on improving staff resilience and wellbeing.
