Purpose of Role:

Nottingham Industrial Museum has a collection of heritage steam and diesel engines as part of their collection.


Role Description:

Nottingham Industrial Museum has a collection of heritage steam and diesel engines as part of their collection. We have a need for people with an interest in engineering to get involved and help run these engines on Steaming Days.

Examples of activities on offer in this role include:-

- operating the boiler and associated machinery
- maintaining electrical systems and knowledge of how to rectify any faults that may occur
- keeping the Steam Hall clean, tidy and engines polished
- taking part in routine and emergency boiler and engine maintenance
- oiling and greasing working machinery as required- assisting in warming through, running and shutting down engines
- raising and maintaining steam to satisfy demand and shut down the boiler when required
- becoming fully conversant with the boiler, machinery and electrical systems and their operation
- gaining knowledge of all boiler room machinery and rectifying any faults that may occur
- directing Steam Hall volunteers in their duties
- training volunteers in their appropriate roles in the Steam Hall
- acting as a Duty Supervisor

Role include:

Skills and Qualifications:

Examples of skills/experience required:
- reasonable fitness to work in a hot environment and ability to carry out physical work
- familiarity with boilers, diesel and steam engines
- good communication skills
- ability to volunteer within a group
- comfortable leading and training

Training and support:
Nottingham Industrial Museum will provide opportunities for training including:
- Induction
- Health & Safety
- Fire Safety Course
- First Aid Course
- Competency-based Training and Assessment of skills

Commitment:
Volunteers will be able to participate for as few or as many sessions as they wish, although it is hoped that volunteers will wish to participate on an ongoing basis. Engines are steamed on the last Sunday of the month, but maintenance and other activities take place on Thursday afternoons/ evenings, in addition to every weekend when the museum is open to the public.
