Purpose of Role:
As part of the Steam Team you will be trained to maintain and run our steam engines, from the impressive Basford Beam Engine to our smaller portable and static engines.
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
As part of the Steam Team you will be trained to maintain and run our engines, from the impressive Basford Beam Engine to our smaller portable and static engines.
Each engine presents a unique and exciting challenge and you will get a real sense of achievement when you have mastered them. You will learn how to fire up the boilers, prepare the engines as well as demonstrate the steam pumping engines to the museum visitors.
You need not have previous experience of steam or railways, although a general knowledge of steam and engine principles will be advantageous. Full training will be provided in all areas of engine operation, including instructions in health and safety and museum operation procedures.
We are looking for a commitment of at least one full day or two half days per month. Steam Team maintenance is carried out on Thursday nights from 6pm until 10pm, and our Steaming Days, usually held on the last Sunday of the month. However Steam Team volunteers are welcome any weekend to assist with the maintenance and running of our other engines.
