Purpose of Role:
We are looking for volunteers to help adults who are learning English by hosting a weekly ‘Conversation Club’ to help adults (males) to;
-build confidence and skills using English in day-to-day situations
-feel championed and empowered
-have a safe space to express themselves
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
Volunteers host and plan weekly small group sessions over 10 weeks, leading conversation for English learners and providing participants with an informal language learning space.

Conversation groups are not formal English classes, so volunteers do not need to be professional ESOL teachers, however, need to be confident English speakers to lead sessions. We value volunteers who can bring life experience as well as learnt experiences into their volunteering roles, and actively encourage applications from all people, whatever their background and including those who speak English as another language. Please note this is volunteer role and unpaid.

The Role
• To lead and plan group sessions that are engaging and appropriate for the learner’s level (a toolkit and framework is given however additional resources or planning may be needed)
• To help participants engage and build confidence during sessions
• Debrief with co-volunteer following sessions to share with the Programme Coordinator
• To create a safe, compassionate, and healthy group setting alongside your co volunteer
• Ability to plan sessions and find resources needed to cover topics (access to a printer may be helpful)

Additional information:
The Build programme is part of The Salvation Army’s survivor support initiatives and seeks to champion and support people who have experienced exploitation. The programme is overseen by the Build programme co-ordinators and volunteers are accountable to them and the wider team.
We are a faith-based organisation but our programmes are open to all. We do not require our staff or volunteers to have a faith but to support the mission and values of The Salvation Army. The Build programme is managed by The Salvation Army’s Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery Integrated Mission team. The team’s strategy focuses on Preventing Modern Slavery and the trafficking of people; Protecting individuals on their journey from victim to survivor and ensuring that in doing so, Progress the survivors’ journey to sustained freedom.

• Confident English speaker and communicator
• Enjoy meeting people and working alongside people
• Compassion, empathy, and ability to help people feel at ease in a group setting
• Ability to be flexible during sessions and follow where participants lead topics
• Reliability and good time keeping
• Commitment to safeguarding and ability to keep confidence and boundaries
• Good local and UK knowledge
• Experience of supporting others (desirable)
