Purpose of Role:
To provide emotional and therapeutic support to young people (12 to 25 years) accessing the Base 51 Counselling Service on a one-to-one basis
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
To provide emotional and therapeutic support to young people (12 to 25 years) accessing the Base 51 Counselling Service on a one-to-one basis. Base 51 Counselling Service provides information, advice, support and counselling to young people who have a wide range of presenting issues and difficulties.

* To develop and promote a positive relationship with the young people with whom the volunteer is matched.
* To manage appropriate professional boundaries in the relationship.
* Maintain confidentiality and other policies and procedures, in accordance with Base 51.
* Work in conjunction with the Counselling Manager to provide a quality service.
* Maintain records for monitoring, evaluation and tracking purposes .
* Attend & participate in regular support and supervision meetings
* Be part of any relevant staff team training days, including organisational Development Days.
* To take responsibility for own professional training and development.
* To keep up to date with developments in the field of counselling.
* Other duties which may from time to time require the input of the volunteer
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
As a minimum, volunteer counsellors must be in the second year of a recognised Counselling Diploma course or for school based services you will need to be in your final year.

Essential Criteria:

- One year counselling training, to certificate level or second year of a diploma or equivalent.
- Commitment to offering weekly availability to agreed shift
- Theoretical grounding in the humanistic school of counselling and psychotherapy and work in a client centred way.
- Individual membership of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy.
- To be bound by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy Ethical framework and/or the member organisations of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy code of ethics.
- A commitment to understanding issues of oppression, specifically in relation to young people.
- Commitment to incorporating equality and diversity principles into all aspects of work.
- A commitment to work within Base 51’s policies and good practice agreements
- A commitment to ongoing support and supervision.
- A commitment to ongoing personal and professional development.
- The ability to reflect and be self-aware; to be in personal therapy, or have had experience of personal therapy.
- A willingness and commitment to complete all work undertaken within Base 51
- The ability to complete administrative forms and to keep confidential records.
- Experience of working with young people.
Have good listening and communication skills.
