This session takes place on Thursday 17 July 2025, from 10.30am to 11.45am
Delivered as a webinar via Teams

This session is part of our SMD Learning Series

This session will be delivered by Lorna Templeton, independent research consultant.

The webinar will draw on two large qualitative studies to consider the unique features of bereavement following an alcohol, other drug or gambling-related death, and the additional challenges that can be experienced when such deaths are referred to the coroner. The webinar will also suggest how support to this group of bereaved people can be improved, using good practice guidelines, and an adapted version of the 5-Step Method intervention as examples.

Presenters:

  • Lorna Templeton has been involved with addiction and the family research for over 25 years, having worked for Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health NHS Partnership Trust, the Universities of Bath and York, and as a freelance consultant. Lorna's work has included understanding how children and families are affected by another's substance use or gambling difficulties, and evaluating services and interventions, and she has been a pivotal figure in the development, evaluation and implementation of both the 5-Step Method and Steps to Cope. Lorna has also been involved in two large studies of adults bereaved by substance use, and bereaved people's experiences of the coroner service in England and Wales. Lorna helped to set up AFINet (Addiction and the Family International Network), which now has over 900 members from over 50 countries.
