Charles Hayward Foundation Small Grant Programme - social and criminal justice

The deadline for applications is Friday 19 September 2025

The Charles Hayward Foundation funds projects that prevent people from entering the criminal justice system and support those already in contact with it to rebuild their lives. Funding for one to three years, with grants of £15,000–£25,000 per year, is available to UK-registered charities with annual income between £350,000 and £4,000,000. Large charities with endowments, substantial reserves, grant-giving programmes, or major government contracts are unlikely to be funded.

Funding priorities:

  • Early intervention for vulnerable families.
  • Preventative and diversionary projects for young people at risk, including girls and young women.
  • Rehabilitation programmes linking prison and community support, housing, mentoring, and employment.
  • Alternatives to custody, especially for women and young people.
  • Support for those affected by domestic abuse.

What the Foundation looks for:

  • Projects addressing complex needs with tailored interventions.
  • Initiatives designed for local situations, often in partnership.
  • Programmes with clear goals, monitoring, and a sustainability plan.
  • Creative or specialist approaches trialling new solutions.

The Foundation welcomes applications that make a meaningful impact on individuals and communities affected by the criminal justice system.
