Purpose of Role:
We need two lead volunteers who can help us lead a small group of volunteers to maintain the shared garden at Hyson Green Library in The Mary Potter Centre.

This recently renovated community space offers a rewarding and social opportunity to help maintain the garden shared between the library and the Acorn Resource Centre. We want to make it a space for adults and children from the local community to enjoy outdoor time, sit, read, relax, and take part in organised events.
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
Why we want you

As one of our Lead Volunteer Gardeners you will work with the other Lead and team member gardeners to maintain the beautiful new feature planters, raised beds and floral features at Hyson Green Library and Acorn Resource Centre shared garden.

We are looking for enthusiastic people with some gardening knowledge who want to make our garden stay beautiful and blooming. This could include:

Planning seasonal work in the garden Organising the tasks for team members, but also taking part and passing on skills Hand-weeding shrub and flower beds Preparing the ground for planting Planting new bedding plants and vegetables/herbs, sowing seeds in the greenhouse Deadheading flowers as necessary Staking plants as necessary Watering plants Sweeping paved areas Helping with occasional activities in the garden

Our library gardens are areas for outdoor activities for adults and children. Places for relaxation, reading, meeting friends and enjoying the benefits of being in nature for health and wellbeing. We need you to help us to maintain and develop these spaces, as well as enjoy a sociable atmosphere and meet new people.

How often will you be needed? During Spring and Autumn sessions in the garden will preferably be every two weeks at least, in summer once a week at least and in winter once a month. Although we are flexible depending upon what needs doing in the garden and if there is a large group of volunteers can be less frequent.

What you will be doing

Planning general garden maintenance: dead heading, weeding, sweeping etc
Helping the team complete tasks
Organising planting e.g. flowers and vegetables
Helping with the care and maintenance of vegetable, fruit, and flowerbeds
Cleaning of garden furniture, keeping shed and greenhouse tidy
Assisting with occasional adult / children’s activities in the garden

The skills you need

A pleasant and helpful manner, motivation, and enthusiasm
A keen interest and some knowledge of gardening
Ability to lead a team and communicate with staff, public and other volunteers
Physical ability to do practical outside tasks
