Could you be our next Trustee?

NCVS is looking for new Trustees. We have a great team, but we are always looking to add to our knowledge and skills base. It is an exciting time for NCVS as we build new relationships with public sector partners, vital for the growth and development of the voluntary sector.

You will be asked to meet six times per year and potentially other times to get involved in specific projects with the staff team. From May 2024 on, we will meet on the last Wednesday of every other month from 4pm to 6pm.

If you would like an informal chat about the role, please email Jules Sebelin at juless@nottinghamcvs.co.uk to arrange an appointment.

Onto pathways new

NCVS sends our congratulations to Laura, Active Travel Social Prescribing Community Coordinator, as she begins her new adventure. Laura will be moving over to Active Partners Trust to become one of the Strategic Walk Leads Notts. Laura has been instrumental in setting up the foundations for the role through her work with GreenSpace and Travel Well (including the Walking Network), and so it is a natural progression for her, and we wish her all the best!

We will still be working closely with Laura, so it's not goodbye; it's see you soon.

Your region, your mayor, your vote

In our last e-bulletin we let you know about the launch of the East Midlands Combined Authority (EMCCA). As part of this, the first ever election for a mayor for the East Midlands is being held and people are encouraged to vote on Thursday 2 May 2024.

The mayor will have new powers and resources to begin a long-term process of growing the region’s economy by investing in skills that lead to better jobs, transport that works better across the region, housing where it’s needed, and an economy equipped to deal with net zero.

Its small team will have specific responsibilities – housing, skills, transport and the environment – and the transfer of powers means it will be doing work previously carried out by government. It will collaborate with councils and will not duplicate what they do or provide services that are best delivered locally.

You need to be on the electoral register by 11.59pm on Tuesday 16 April to vote. Register to vote here.

GreenSpace (green social prescribing)
GreenSpace green social prescribing banner image
GreenSpace, the green social prescribing programme for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

Green social prescribing is a way of connecting people to nature-based activities and green groups, projects and schemes in their local community for support with health and wellbeing. Often this will be through a referral from a Link Worker based at a GP practice or another primary care professional.

Our scheme in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, called GreenSpace, was one of seven government Green Social Prescribing Test and Learn sites.

While the National Test and Learn may have ended, NCVS continues to embed green social prescribing into health systems to make nature-based/outdoor activities an intervention of choice to support people to improve and maintain their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Consultation on Charging for Appointeeships

Deadline for responses is Sunday 7 April 2024

Nottingham City Council is proposing to change the way it manages the money of citizens who live in a residential care or nursing home who need support because they are unable to manage their own money. This could be due to severe disability or mental incapacity. They would like your support with obtaining the views of the citizens affected, or your views as an organisation working in areas of advocacy and disability support.

Currently, the Adult Residential Service charging for care team (ARS) manages approximately 250 care home residents’ money under ‘appointeeship’ where they don’t have the capacity to manage it themselves.

Going forward, it is proposed that these ‘appointeeship’ cases will be managed by the Deputyship Service. The Deputyship Service is a specialist money management team within the Local Authority who manage the property and financial affairs of citizens who lack mental capacity under an order from the Court of Protection.

Nottingham City Council believe that this change would have a positive impact for citizens. Have your say at the link below.

Banking is one of the most frustrating challenges that voluntary organisations experience. Since 2021, NAVCA has been working closely with partners across the voluntary sector to improve banking services for charities and voluntary organisations.

Together with UK Finance and large high street banks, the Civil Society Group has developed the Voluntary Organisation Banking Guide, a web hub that will launch soon.

Respond to this survey to tell NAVCA about your experiences of banking. Your story will help them continue to advocate for better banking services for voluntary organisations.
