NCVS e-bulletin - Thursday 26 June 2025

Welcome to this edition of the NCVS e-bulletin – your perfect excuse to put the kettle on and skip that email you’ve been putting off!

There’s been a bit of change in the team over the past few weeks – we’ve said a fond farewell to one of our GreenSpace team but also welcomed a new face to the ever-growing Changing Futures project. Meanwhile, Helen’s been working hard behind the scenes supporting potential applicants to the new Police and Crime Commissioner fund (you can find out more about that fund here).

Now, let’s get stuck in. In this edition, you’ll find:

  • Team updates: welcoming a new colleague and saying goodbye to a valued one
  • Dave’s latest blog on resolving those tricky volunteer issues
  • Training for anyone keen to become a bike ride leader, courtesy of Travel Well and Ridewise
  • Loads of new funding and training opportunities

...and plenty more.

Happy reading!

Celebrating Nottingham’s honourees

Everyone at NCVS would like to offer heartfelt congratulations to Merlita Bryan, who has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours 2025 for her outstanding services to the community in Nottingham.

Merlita is the inspirational founder of the Black Achievers Awards, a celebration that shines a light on the incredible contributions of Nottingham’s Black and ethnic minority communities. NCVS is proud to sponsor the Community Volunteer of the Year category at the Awards each year, and we’ve seen first-hand the passion and dedication Merlita brings to championing local people.

Read Merlita’s interview with the BBC

We’d also like to extend our warmest congratulations to Ben Rosser of The Pythian Club, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM). NCVS has supported the Pythian Club for a number of years, and it’s fantastic to see Ben’s work recognised in this way.

Read more about Ben’s story, and the other Nottinghamshire recipients

Their recognition is richly deserved, and we’re proud to see Nottingham’s community champions honoured in this way.

New faces, fond farewells

We’ve got a team update to share! Below, we’re saying a big thank you and goodbye to a much-loved colleague, and giving a warm welcome to a new face joining the NCVS team. Read on for both messages…

Christina Barbian
Farewell and thank you to Christina

As NCVS says farewell to Christina, Sarah Paine, Green Social Prescribing Lead, shares these words. 'Christina has been a dedicated and valued Project Officer on the Green Social Prescribing extension this year, bringing incredible energy, insight, and care - especially in her work with the young people’s cohort.

Her background in talking therapies and extensive experience supporting young people have deeply enriched our work. Christina has also played a key role in contributing to the national evaluation, helping us reflect and learn at each stage of the journey.

As she returns to her roots in talking therapies, we know she’ll continue to advocate for the power of nature connection. We wish her all the very best in the next chapter - and hope to see her passion for nature and wellbeing flourish even further in her future work.'

Jenna Athi, Changing Futures Ethnic Minority Community Engagement Coordinator
Hello Jenna

Hello, everyone! I'm the Ethnic Minority Community Engagement Officer for Changing Futures Nottingham. I will be working with ethnic minority community groups in Nottingham to teach them about Severe and Multiple Disadvantage (SMD) and learn from them about the barriers people from ethnic minorities face when accessing the support that they need. Hopefully I'll be able to improve services and help to educate others.

Before this role, I studied Biomedical Science at university, I worked for an e-learning provider company, and I volunteer for the charity Just Like Us. I also love to go for a walk in a park, bake, be creative, and travel with my girlfriend.

I look forward to what this new role can bring, and thank you so much for everyone that's made me feel so welcome!

What the 2025 Spending Review means for charities and communities

The government has announced its latest Spending Review, setting out how public money will be spent over the next few years. There are some positives, like an extension to free school meals, but also growing concerns about how welfare cuts could increase pressure on charities.

Helen, Sector Growth Coordinator, has simplified what it all means and pulled out key points for the voluntary sector.

Dave Thomas, NCVS Volunteering Development Officer
Resolving problems in volunteer programmes

Even the best volunteer programmes can hit the occasional bump in the road. When issues crop up, how do you handle them without damaging the goodwill and trust that volunteers bring?

In his latest blog, Dave Thomas, Volunteering Development Officer, offers a simple and supportive four-step approach to resolving problems with volunteers - one that’s rooted in empathy, not employment law.

This approach is miles apart from formal grievance or disciplinary processes used with paid staff, and that’s exactly the point. Volunteers need a process that fits their unique role, not a policy pulled from HR.

Bonus: Download our ready-to-use volunteer problem-solving template to help you put this approach into action.
