Building Resilience in Ethnically Diverse Communities: What we've Learned

Based on findings from community engagement into why some communities don't access NHS Talking Therapy services, carried out in 2023, NCVS partnered with Al-Hurraya to provide three training sessions in March and early April. Feedback from attendees was very positive and really highlighted the continued need to promote and de-stigmatise talking about our mental health.

Save the date
As a result of this training, we are organising a community event to equip people with basic knowledge about mental health. The aim is to raise awareness of mental health within communities that experience low levels of take-up of services, particularly people from South Asian backgrounds. The event will be held on Thursday 6 June 2024 at The Indian Community Centre, 99 Hucknall Road, NG5 1QZ. Once the agenda and speakers are finalised, we will let you know how to register.

Could you be our next Trustee?

NCVS is looking for new Trustees. We have a great team, but we are always looking to add to our knowledge and skills base. It is an exciting time for NCVS as we build new relationships with public sector partners, vital for the growth and development of the voluntary sector.

You will be asked to meet six times per year and potentially other times to get involved in specific projects with the staff team. From May 2024 on, we will meet on the last Wednesday of every other month from 4pm to 6pm.

If you would like an informal chat about the role, please email Jules Sebelin at juless@nottinghamcvs.co.uk to arrange an appointment.

Charities invited to participate in year-long anti-racism programme

The deadline for applications is Monday 13 May 2024

As part of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations' (Acevo) Home Truths 2 project, the Further, Faster programme is looking for up to 50 senior executives from charities to learn how to challenge power, racism and white supremacy culture.

The year-long programme will be delivered by Martha Awojobi, founder and director of JMB Consulting, and Pari Dhillon, director of the Social Justice Collective, and will be aimed at senior executives in the voluntary sector who are already committed to anti-racism and have taken steps towards this work.

Participants will be selected based on a range of criteria, including their willingness to be self-reflective, to interrogate relationships to power, and to understand the limitations of equality, diversity and inclusion. Successful participants will be expected to attend seven online sessions between September 2024 and June 2025. The programme will also offer two half-day, in-person, or hybrid sessions where participants can meet their cohort at the start and end of the process.

Please note that there will be a fee, on a sliding scale based on your organisation's income, to enable the programme's facilitation. This fee will be between £495 for charities with an income under £100,000 and £4,795 for charities with an income above £20 million.

Consultations and Surveys
VCSE Observatory Barometer Survey now open

Survey is open until Wednesday 1 May 2024

Nottingham Trent University, Pro Bono Economics and Lloyds Bank Foundation's quarterly VCSE Barometer Survey is now live. The survey charts current challenges and issues affecting voluntary and community sector groups and organisations. It is supported by the major UK national VCSE infrastructure organisations and membership bodies. Latest findings are shared every quarter with national, regional and local policy and decision-makers.

Designed to be a quick and easy ‘temperature check’ of the current state of the sector, the survey provides a snapshot of financial health, workforce, volunteering and other key sector issues. This quarter’s special focus is on volunteering, particularly understanding how recruitment and retention approaches are evolving.
