Volunteering News
Dave Thomas, Volunteering Development Officer at NCVS

Dave Thomas, Volunteering Development Officer at NCVS, continues his series of articles in support of Leaders of Volunteers.

The Triple Dividend of Workplace Volunteering?

Dave reflects on a recent Pro Bono Economics report about Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV). The report suggests ESV can improve employee wellbeing, boost productivity, and support charities with up to 2.8 million additional volunteers.

However, Dave highlights a key omission: the financial implications for the voluntary sector. The report lacks detail on the costs and work required to set up ESV projects, and whether businesses should be charged for these opportunities. Despite this, Dave remains optimistic about the potential benefits of ESV for both companies and the community.

GreenSpace (green social prescribing)
GreenSpace green social prescribing banner image
GreenSpace, the green social prescribing programme for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

Green social prescribing is a way of connecting people to nature-based activities and green groups, projects and schemes in their local community for support with health and wellbeing. Often this will be through a referral from a Link Worker based at a GP practice or another primary care professional.

Our scheme in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, called GreenSpace, was one of seven government Green Social Prescribing Test and Learn sites.

While the National Test and Learn may have ended, NCVS continues to embed green social prescribing into health systems to make nature-based/outdoor activities an intervention of choice to support people to improve and maintain their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Community RePaint

Do you need affordable paint for your project or have you got leftover paint?

Community RePaint is a UK wide paint reuse network, sponsored by Dulux, that aims to collect leftover paint and redistribute it to benefit individuals, families, communities and charities in need at an affordable cost.

Schemes are hosted by community organisations, local authorities and waste management companies promoting reuse. As they all operate a little differently, search for your nearest scheme here.

Most schemes charge a small fee of up to £2 per litre, which helps the scheme be sustainable.

Heritage in Mind: Showcasing Archaeology's Impact on Wellbeing

The York Archaeology (YA) Nottingham Office has been awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to host a series of hands-on sessions designed to engage Nottingham City and County residents in archaeological and heritage-based activities. They want to showcase how such activities can improve health and well-being, foster new social connections, and improve self-esteem and confidence through the acquisition of new skills and knowledge.

Over the course of two months in autumn 2024, the project is looking to collaborate with various groups within the county or city, offering a diverse range of activities for participants to engage in. If you are a local group interested in hosting one of these heritage sessions, please get in contact; they would love to hear from you!

Consultations and Surveys
Shape the Vision: Have Your Say on the Future of Nottingham City Library Service

The deadline to complete the survey is Monday 19 August 2024

Nottingham City Council has recently launched the Shape the Vision public consultation to gather feedback from the public and partners regarding the budget proposals for the city library service.

On the Nottingham City Libraries website, you will find full details of the consultation proposals which include the closure of four libraries, Aspley, Basford, Bilborough and Radford-Lenton, reducing opening hours elsewhere as well as reductions to their book fund and other areas of spend. No decisions have yet been made and alternative suggestions are welcomed.

Please take the time to view the proposals and complete the consultation survey. This can be done as a member of the public, as a Nottingham City Council employee or as an official response on behalf of your organisation, and please share the consultation with your networks to help them reach as wide an audience around the city as possible. There are posts on both @nottmlibraries and @mynottingham Facebook channels which you are welcome to share.

There will be a series of public consultation meetings, available both in person and online. Details about these meetings, along with printable versions of the survey for adults and children, FAQs, and other related documents, can be found at the above link. Additionally, paper copies of the survey are available at any city library.

If you have any queries, please contact engage@nottinghamcity.gov.uk.
