NCVS e-bulletin - Thursday 10 July 2025

Welcome to this edition of the NCVS e-bulletin – your perfect excuse to put the kettle on and skip that email you’ve been putting off!

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes over the past few months on something exciting — a very special birthday present for Nottingham’s incredible voluntary and community sector!

Sector Forward: Nottingham's VCSE Conference 2025 is coming, and we can’t wait to share more with you soon.

At the same time, like many of you, we’ve been following the difficult news about the closure of Healthwatch England. We know this raises questions about the future of our local Healthwatch services, and we’re committed to keeping you updated as we learn more. You’ll find the latest information below.

Now, let’s get stuck in. In this edition, you’ll find:

  • A new initiative to support those experiencing domestic violence
  • The first in a series of blogs on 'the volunteer journey'
  • An opportunity for all the shutterbugs out there
  • Last chance to vote for your Black Achiever
  • Loads of new funding and training opportunities

...and plenty more.

Happy reading!

Congratulations to Reverend Clive Foster - First Windrush Commissioner

NCVS extends our warmest congratulations to Reverend Clive Foster MBE, a long-standing community leader and valued collaborator, on his appointment as the UK’s first Windrush Commissioner.

Clive, Executive Dean for EDI and Multi-Faith Manager at Nottingham Trent University, has worked tirelessly to champion equality, inclusion and justice. NCVS has been proud to work alongside him on numerous local initiatives, and we are delighted to see his continued impact recognised on a national stage.

Read more about his appointment via Nottingham Trent University and the BBC.

We wish Clive every success in this historic role.

J9 Domestic Abuse Initiative

Equation are delighted to have secured continuation funding for another year of the J9 Domestic Abuse Initiative project in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. The J9 initiative is a community-focused safe space project which works with organisations and businesses to make it easier for those experiencing domestic abuse to get support. Equation are offering 90-minute training sessions to increase understanding of what domestic abuse is, how to spot it, and how to respond. For the 25 to 26 year our funding has shifted slightly, and we are able to offer these sessions for free to the following sectors (sessions available outside of this at a cost):

  • Community organisations (City)
  • Housing (City)
  • Healthcare (City & County)

To hear more about the J9 Domestic Abuse initiative or to schedule your training session, contact training@equation.org.uk.

NCVS responds to the sad Healthwatch England news

We were saddened to hear the recent announcement that Healthwatch England is to be abolished—a decision that will have serious implications for the hundreds of local Healthwatch branches across the country, including here in Nottinghamshire.

Since its creation in 2012, Healthwatch England has played a vital role in amplifying the voices of patients and social care users, ensuring those most affected by decisions have a seat at the table. As Louise Ansari, Chief Executive of Healthwatch England, said:

'Over the past twelve years, we've helped millions of people raise concerns, access vital advice, and influence real change in the services they rely on.'

At NCVS, we’ve long recognised the importance of independent, community-rooted voices in shaping health and care services. While the government proposes to replace this vital listening function with digital feedback through the NHS App, we believe real, local engagement cannot be replaced by technology alone.

We encourage you to read Healthwatch’s latest statement on the NHS 10-year plan and the future of local Healthwatch. We'll continue to keep our community informed as more details emerge.

Welcome to the new Team Talk centre, your one-stop shop for all things tips, tricks, and resources. Here you'll find the latest from the team at NCVS.

Dave Thomas, Volunteering Development Officer
Kicking off our volunteer journey blog series

How do you attract the right volunteers - not just any volunteers?

In the first of our new blog series, Volunteering Development Officer Dave Thomas explores the first vital step in the volunteer journey: attraction. He reminds us that recruitment starts long before a role is advertised, when someone first discovers your organisation and asks, 'Could I see myself here?'

From crafting purpose-led role outlines to sharing real stories and using inclusive, values-based messaging, Dave shares five practical ways to spark genuine interest and connection.

Valuable funding support comes to a close - but applications are still open

Over the past weeks, our colleague Helen, Sector Growth Coordinator, has been providing tailored support to local groups applying for the Safer Nottinghamshire Together Grants. While this one-to-one support has come to an end, the funding remains open for applications - and we encourage organisations to apply.

Here’s what some groups have shared about Helen’s guidance:

'Even though we won’t be progressing with the funding, we’re very grateful for the help and support you’ve given us. The information has been invaluable in helping us formalise our organisation, something we will definitely continue at a slower pace.'

'It was great to speak with you and get guidance on doing things properly. I’ll be working with our main team to sort things out. Sometimes we do things out of love and care, but it’s important to follow the right policies and legal steps. I’m glad for the meeting - even if it wasn’t the outcome I wanted, it’s exactly what I need right now.'

Groups also told us that once fully established, they’ll be in a stronger position to apply for funding in the future - and that’s exactly the kind of progress we hope to support.

If your organisation is ready to apply, find out more about the Safer Nottinghamshire Together Grants and how to apply here.

If you need support in future funding rounds or with organisational development, keep an eye on NCVS updates or get in touch to discuss how we can help.

There are plenty more blogs, think pieces and helpful resources on our website.

From first steps to full stride: Runspire's journey with NCVS

What started as one man’s idea for a local running group has grown into a citywide wellbeing initiative, and NCVS has been proud to support the journey every step of the way.

Back in 2022, Paul contacted NCVS for help setting up a small running group in Bulwell. With guidance from our team, Bulwell Runners was born and quickly grew to include walking sessions, Nordic walking, and now, a rebranded citywide organisation: Runspire Nottingham.

With support from Travel Well, GreenSpace, and our Volunteering team, Paul has turned Runspire into his full-time job, creating inclusive, active spaces across Nottingham and helping train others to do the same.

Have a story to share? As part of our 150th anniversary, we’re collecting case studies that celebrate NCVS’s impact over the years. Get in touch to tell us yours!

GreenSpace (green social prescribing)
GreenSpace green social prescribing banner image
GreenSpace, the green social prescribing programme for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

Green social prescribing is a way of connecting people to nature-based activities and green groups, projects and schemes in their local community for support with health and wellbeing. Often this will be through a referral from a Link Worker based at a GP practice or another primary care professional.

Our scheme in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, called GreenSpace, was one of seven government Green Social Prescribing Test and Learn sites.

While the National Test and Learn may have ended, NCVS continues to embed green social prescribing into health systems to make nature-based/outdoor activities an intervention of choice to support people to improve and maintain their mental and physical health and wellbeing.
