Purpose of Role:

Role Description:

Family Lives and Sport England are working to support families get active together, because parents and close family members can have a big impact on children’s experiences. Volunteers will be trained to work directly with families of children aged 5-10 to empower parents to become more active by attending organised and self-directed activities, and through lifestyle changes to improve health and fitness.

The project is called Energise Families and is a fitness for all programme and it’s important to meet the parent at their level to listen, to motivate, and to follow the parent’s lead. This will create incremental changes that lead to a sustainable, healthier life-style, as well as encourage positive feelings about exercise and its value in their children.

The volunteer will be fully supervised, supported and trained to provide the following activities:

Befriend families to support them to become more active on a one to one basis either in community settings (such as community centres or parks) or in the family home. This would involve building and maintaining a relationship with the individual family over a period of time

To provide information to the families about activities available for the whole family

To help families to overcome barriers to being active and to suggest small steps towards change by listening and helping them off-load feelings
