Volunteer Local - At the heart of Nottingham communities

Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service (NCVS) is launching a new project called Volunteer Local which will place it at the heart of local communities.

The drop-in service will provide face-to-face support to voluntary and community sector groups looking for volunteers and promote volunteer opportunities to local people.

Launching this September (2021)

Volunteer Local will launch at Bulwell Riverside, in Nottingham (NG6 8QJ), on Friday 10 September 2021, from 10am till 1pm. The service will continue to run every Friday at the centre, from this date onwards. Covid-19 safety precautions will be in place to protect staff and those accessing the service.

Bulwell is a vibrant community with easy access from surrounding areas by car, bus and tram. It has a number of active community groups operating in the north of the city and a great culture of community involvement and volunteering.

'A community-based approach'

Celina Adams, Head of Operations at NCVS, said, “NCVS has historically delivered the Volunteer Centre service from our building on Mansfield Road but is now developing a community-based approach. By taking our team and our wealth of information about how we can support volunteers and voluntary/community groups into the heart of local communities, we want to encourage many more people to take up volunteering and help groups get the support they need to run, grow and develop.

“Our hope is to reach new people and those smaller groups that do not currently have the capacity to get involved with city-centre based services. Our outcome is to provide local volunteer opportunities for local people and more accessible support for local voluntary and community sector groups.”

NCVS has hosted the Volunteer Centre for over 42 years and has supported thousands of people to find volunteering opportunities in Nottingham. In the past five years alone, it has received enquiries from more than 10,000 potential volunteers.

The new Volunteer Local service will be run by NCVS Volunteering Development Officer Dave Thomas, with support from a friendly team of Volunteer Advisers. Dave has almost 40 years’ experience within the voluntary sector and manages the Volunteer Centre on a day-to-day basis.

Can you help us run Volunteer Local?

In the near future, NCVS hopes to work with more community venues to run the Volunteer Local service at other locations across the city. If your community venue would be interested in working with NCVS in this way, please get in touch. Email volunteercentre@nottinghamcvs.co.uk or call Dave Thomas on 07483 422 503.
