Learn more about how the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) can support voluntary organisations with safer recruitment in this free online 90-minute workshop.

If you work in a voluntary organisation that supports children or vulnerable adults, you may be accustomed to asking staff and volunteers to get DBS checks during your recruitment process. You may wonder, why is this needed and how does it affect your organisation?

Anyone who works in a safeguarding or recruitment role is welcome to attend this free online workshop.

The session will be delivered by Lizzie Whittington, Regional Outreach Adviser for the DBS in the East Midlands. Lizzie will take you through the process of applying for DBS checks, how to select which level of check is right for particular volunteer and paid roles and what to do if a certificate comes back with information on it.

The session covers the meaning of the “barred list” and how you, as an employer, must play an essential role in referring safeguarding issues to DBS in order to protect your vulnerable service users and those all over the UK.

Lizzie will also share how she can continue supporting you and your organisation following the workshop and you will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout.

We will cover:

  • What types of DBS checks are available and their eligibility
  • How “regulated activity” with children and adults is defined with examples relevant to the voluntary sector
  • What leads to an individual being added to the “barred list”?
  • When do you have a duty to make a referral?
  • How to make a good quality barring referral.

The session will take place over Zoom, so please make sure you have access to this software before registering for a place.
