This free online briefing contributes to safeguarding knowledge and awareness. Join us for an overview of sexual safety within the context of local and national developments and the publication of the Sexual Safety Collaborative standards and guidance.

Sexual safety refers to the respect and maintenance of an individual’s physical (including sexual) and psychological boundaries. This briefing will be of particular relevance to those within health and social care voluntary and community sector services, although the briefing will be of interest to a wider audience and is open to all.

The briefing will be presented by Julie McGarry, Associate Professor at University of Nottingham and Research Lead for Sexual Safety at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. There will be an opportunity to view and share resources developed by Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust for wider dissemination and use.

Julie McGarry was part of the Expert Reference Group contributing to the Sexual Safety Collaborative Standards and guidance to improve sexual safety on mental health and learning disabilities inpatient pathways, published in 2020.

Further background:

The Sexual Safety Collaborative is part of a wider Mental Health Safety Improvement Programme (MHSIP) which was established by NHS Improvement (NHSI), in partnership with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), in response to a request made by the Secretary of State. One of the Collaborative’s main tasks was to create Sexual Safety Standards and guidance on improving sexual safety in inpatient environments.

The standards have been coproduced with a wide range of stakeholders, including people with lived experience.

The sexual safety standards are applicable to all people within the inpatient environment and can be used to keep everybody safe: those receiving care, staff and visiting staff, families, friends and visitors.
