Christmas Volunteering
We're already being asked about what volunteering opportunities are going to be available up to and during
Christmas.
Last year we were told by lots of organisations that they did not want volunteers for a few days over Christmas
and we had to turn a lot of potential volunteers away. One organisation actually said to me that they were
not interested in people who just wanted to volunteer to make themselves feel good.
This year, I'm starting the hunt for Christmas opportunities a bit earlier, and would ask you to think creatively
about what you might be able to offer up to and at Christmas.
There is always a lot of media attention about Christmas Volunteering, so there is a lot of potential for
positive publicity for your organisation.
Some of those Christmas volunteers could well be turned into long-term volunteers, or encouraged to come
back and volunteer again later in the year. Indeed, organisations that insist on regular, weekly commitment
from their volunteers are swimming against the tide because there is a well documented trend for people
to offer more episodic, one-off or occasional commitment. Christmas provides a great opportunity to capitalise
on this.
If you're planning to provide any kind of service up to and during Christmas, please talk to me about how
you can involve volunteers in this.
