CLAIT

CLAIT is an OCR Stage 1 vocational qualification that accredits competence in practical IT skills at an introductory level.

CLAIT is the number one IT qualification in the UK, with over 380,000 entries last year. Approximately two million people in the UK now hold a CLAIT certificate.

There are numerous different applications that can be assessed in CLAIT, from Word Processing to Computer Aided Design. Candidates can enter for as many or as few as they like, all for the same fee - success in any three will entitle them to a full CLAIT certificate.

A CLAIT certificate is a positive statement of competence in a very tightly defined set of skills. As the syllabus is criterion-referenced, a successful candidate must have demonstrated competence in each and every assessment objective and as such, an employer need never be in any doubt of the candidate's ability.

Who is it for?

CLAIT is suitable for just about anyone looking for certification in introductory IT skills - whether in schools, colleges or employment. There are no restrictions on age or experience and there are no limits to when assessments can be taken, other than those set by the college or training provider.

Courses leading to CLAIT certification can be as long or as short as the learner requires, and in practice training providers are known to offer CLAIT in many and varied ways - from two-day intensive courses to drop-in courses over many years.

How does it work?

CLAIT has been designed to be simple and inexpensive to run. Centres must initially register with OCR to offer CLAIT, in return for which they will receive a copy of the Tutor's Handbook and Syllabus, along with all documentation necessary to run the qualification. Centre registration is free.

Is CLAIT a recognised qualification?

CLAIT was initially developed in 1984 and has been the most widely recognised benchmark for introductory IT skills ever since.

CLAIT is approved under Schedule 2(a) to the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 and is also approved for teaching in schools.

How much will it cost?

CLAIT is remarkably inexpensive in comparison to many other IT qualifications at only £15.35 per candidate entry (until August 2001). This fee covers candidate entry for any amount of applications. There are no fees for Centre registration or for assessment material, and no additional fees for certification.
