New measures
Changes in legislation have been introduced from October 2009. These new measures have been introduced to help protect children and vulnerable adults from unsuitable workers and volunteers. It’s called the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) and is here to stay.
We are here to remove the confusion and help you understand what will change and how it affects you and your organisation.
To help implement the Scheme a new public body has been set up called the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). They have powers to bar unsuitable people from positions where they might pose a risk to vulnerable people.
Important dates
July 2010: all new employees, those moving jobs and volunteers who want to work with children or vulnerable adults can register with the ISA.
November 2010: all new employees and volunteers who want to work with children or vulnerable adults must be ISA-registered.
Who does it affect?
From this date, if you work with children or vulnerable adults it will be illegal to employ new people who are not ISA-registered. This will be a mandatory requirement. Failing to comply could result in both the employer and voluntary organisation being prosecuted.
Groups that work with children or vulnerable adults also won’t be allowed to take on a volunteer until they have been registered. As an organisation that involves volunteers you are required to check every volunteer is ISA-registered before you can legally take them on. You will be able to do this online for free at www.isa-gov.org.uk.
