Overview
The Nottingham Council for Voluntary Service (NCVS) was established in 1875 for the purpose of
acting as an umbrella body for the voluntary and community sectors in the city of Nottingham.
NCVS welcomes and celebrates the richness and diversity of the communities in Nottingham and is
strongly committed to achieving equal opportunities for all people and groups in society.
NCVS recognises, however, that some people suffer oppression, unfair discrimination and lack
of opportunity on various grounds, including, for example, their gender, race, religion or
sexuality.
NCVS is committed to establishing and maintaining a culture of implementing equal opportunities
in all that it does taking positive action in seeking to promote social justice implementing
anti-discriminatory practices in all areas of work and amongst its members and users challenging
oppression and inequality sharing its experiences through openness and transparency.
NCVS has benefited voluntary and community sectors in the Nottingham area by offering support,
advice, training and a number of other services. NCVS is housed in the Nottingham Voluntary
Action Centre (NVAC), which is located on Mansfield road, close to Victoria Centre.
NVAC was developed by NCVS at a cost of 1.6 million pounds. It was funded by Nottingham City
Council, English Partnerships, the National Lottery Charities Board, the European Regional
Development Fund and charitable trusts. NVAC has provided NCVS with the opportunity to provide
training, development and resources for local voluntary organisations and individuals. It also
offers office space for key local charities and voluntary sector groups. It is fully accessible
to people with different abilities and offers central resource facilities to support the needs
of the voluntary sector and community at affordable prices.
